In 2003 and 2007 Michael Veerapen received Grammy’s for Best Jazz Release and in 2009 he received his third Grammy’s for Best World Release. Jakob Dinesen will be joined by accomplished Jazz pianist, producer, record studio head and mentor, Michael Veerapen for the evening. Launching his career before even graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music with Summa Cum Laude in 1982, Michael was the music director, composer and orchestrator for the 2017 SEA Games grand opening ceremony.
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Julian Chan has been an active performer in the Malaysian and regional music scene since 2001. He has graduated with a Masters degree in Jazz Performance from Queens College in New York, where he studied with jazz greats Antonio Hart, Michael Mossman, (the late) Prof. Howard Brofsky and David Berkman.
Julian has performed with both local and international artistes (both jazz and of other styles) such as Michael Veerapen (MY), Jeremy Monteiro (SG), Koh Mr. Saxman (THAI), Laura Fygi, Carmen Bradford (US), James Morrison (AUS), Eugene Pao (HK), Isao Miyoshi (JP), Tony Lakatos (GER), Jonathan Lee 李宗 盛 (Taiwan), Jeff Chang 张信哲 (Taiwan), Sheila Majid (MY), James Flynn (AUS), Anthony Strong (UK), Claude Diallo (Switzerland/NY). He has also shared the stage with many prominent musicians such as Antonio Hart, Randy Brecker, Fritz Renold, Christian Jacobs, Bobby Watson, and Branford Marsalis. Julian has also performed in many festivals including Java Jazz Festival, Macau Jazz Festival, SingJazz International Jazz Festival, ASEAN Jazz Festival (Malaysia), EFG London Jazz Festival, Penang International Jazz Festival.
Jocelyn Wong Lixian – otherwise known as Jo – is a Malaysian girl through and through. Jo started learning music at the age of four, first attending piano/electone classes in Yamaha Music School, then slowly developing strong interests towards violin and singing. Throughout her schooling years, she has been actively involved in onstage activities such as public speaking, singing and then later, playing in bands and performing in wedding functions, hotel gigs, music festivals and private corporate functions. She started writing her own songs since she was 13, and started her own band at the age of 15.
Jo’s music genre is a wide range of pop, soul, rock, RnB and funk. Leaning towards being an independent solo artist, her showcase debuted at Laundry Bar at The Curve in 2013 at a young age of 19, performing covers as well as her own compositions. She has since then performed at various prestigious venues and festivals as an independent artist.
Now primarily a singer/ songwriter, Jo is involved mostly in performances as well as private instruction in piano, violin and singing. She has taught over 20 students at various music centers since 2012. Her achievements include LTCL Diploma in Piano, ATCL Diploma in Violin, Yamaha Grade 4 and Berklee Transfer Program course completion at International College of Music. Jo is currently furthering her degree in song-writing at Berklee College of Music since January 2015.
Jo’s self-titled EP “Jocelyn Lixian” is released on the 7th of November 2014.
